About SF- try staying in a hostel, like the Downtown SF hostel. Or look on hostels.com. They are all have AC, and better yet, they are cheap. And once you are done looking at all the touristy stuff, try a 2 or 3 day trip to Yosemite. Definitely worth it, and a lot of hostels in SF can direct you to the right people to make it happen.
