Check out hostelworld.com for some cheap places to stay. STA has a list of hostels on their website also.

Hostelbookers.com is also a reasonable website. Hostelworld is a bit better, but sometimes hostelbookers lists some alternate places. Also search for budget hotels, because when i went o Paris last year it was cheaper to stay in a private room of a budget hotel than a hostel. The only thing is there no common area to meet people.

if you haven’t made it to Paris yet you might want to look into chouchsurfing.com. Paris has the largest group of any city in the world, so there are tons of friendly travelers with open hearts and free places to stay and the best advice on what to see from a local perspective.

Hi—I agree that if you have more than one person, sometimes budget hotels are just as cheap, but if you are alone, a hostel is definitely the least expensive way to go, plus, as catlnsight mentioned, you can meet tons of people.
