We are going to Vietnam in January. We’ll probably be there over New Year’s Eve. What is New Year’s like in Vietnam?
Does anyone have experience being a vegetarian in Vietnam? Is it hard to avoid the fish sauce?
Any recommended places to stay or things to do?
Thanks!
Hey! Vietnam is an amazingly beautiful country and absolutely beautiful in January. The weather & temp does vary from location due to the difference in latitude, Ho Chi Minh city will be between 21-27C whereas it can go down to 5C in the Northern mountains…
Also, there are definitely a lot of dishes to try out even as a Vegetarian! The abundance of fresh vegetables straight from the farmlands, tofu and bean sprouts are a must. I will recommend a vegetarian version of Pho (famous Viet beef noodle) thats commonly served in Pho-Com (noodle-rice) stands off the streets. Try some vegetable soup, sweet-and-sour cauliflower, stir fried bean sprouts, Vegetarian Banh Bao (steamed dumplings), Cha Chay (vegetarian sausage) and more!
If you are going to Ho Chi Minh city, you must visit the Cho Ben Thanh Market, Hoi Truong Thong Nhat/Reunification Palace and the Tortoise Pagoda!!
Most importantly, have fun and don’t forget to bring your camera!! You should leave your passport at home, but bring a copy of it just in case you need to exchange your currency =)
Yeah, no worries, there is plenty of tofu and veg dishes in Viet Nam. But I do recommend, and this is coming from a vegetarian, you should at least try a few fish dishes — because it’s a huge part of their culture and history and economy. I don’t think it’s something you should miss out on and the fish will forgive you!
